Does painting your house increase value

When it comes to home resale value there are several things one can do to increase its value. House painting is one of them. In addition to increasing value, painting makes your house sell faster which means you will save on your mortgage, taxes and utilities.

HGTV’s 30 Tips for Increasing Your Home’s Value lists painting your house number 3.

Start by painting the exterior
It takes about 3 seconds for someone to form an impression of a house. Not necessarily a decision but that will make them evaluate it further. In order to catch that first impression you need your house to look in top shape as people pull in the driveway. You might also want to consider some landscaping if needed.

Then some interior painting
Over time the bright white ceilings turn into a tired grayish look, the trim starts to yellow especially if its painted with oil base paint. Bringing potential buyers in a tired looking home will get you fewer offers and lower numbers. Freshly painted white ceilings and trim, and neutral colored walls will make your home more appealing to buyers and increase value.

House Painting CT

Exterior:

If you live in CT you probably know that painting the exterior of your house is limited to the weather.
So when is a good time to paint?
That is completely dependent on temperature. There are some paints that allow you to work as low as 35° like Sherwin Williams Resilience, others might require 50°. Usually oil paints require higher temperature. Normally the exterior house painting season in CT runs between March and November.

There are others, I didn’t want to make this page super long so nobody would ever find nothing.

Interior:

Interior house painting CT shouldn’t be any different from the rest of the country and can be performed throughout the year provided there is heat in the house when it’s cold.

Where are paint prices headed?

Just as exterior painting season approaches the paint prices have started to crawl up. But where is this all coming from? Below are quotes from The Wall Street Journal explaining. You can read their full story here

Voracious demand from China, India and other emerging markets is boosting prices for titanium dioxide, a key ingredient in paint, just as it has for oil, copper, iron ore and fertilizer. As raw-material prices rise, manufacturers are trying to pass the added cost through to consumers, stoking inflation fears.

Painting contractors all over US have also suffered business by increased material costs.

Sherwin-Williams raised prices in its paint stores three times last year, by a total of more than 16%. House painter Aaron Obringer, who owns Precision Brush Painting in Pittsburgh, said he now pays around $25 for a gallon of basic flat interior paint, up from $20 a year or two ago. “It’s like out of control,” he said, adding that paint-store employees blamed “something going on in China.”

It is true I have seen Sherwin Williams, Benjamin More and other professional paint stores increase prices at least twice last year and once this year so far.
And the inevitable question is what can be done?
