Choosing the Right Color for New England Light

When we originally published this list of top colors back in 2012, we pointed out a major problem in the painting industry: most “popular color” lists are national. But the region you live in makes a massive difference in the colors you should choose.

The natural light here in New England tends to be cooler and bluer than in the South or West. Because of this, certain warm neutrals and rich grays look absolutely stunning in our local historic colonials and modern builds. After 22 years of painting interiors and exteriors across Hartford County, these are the timeless Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams colors that have never gone out of style.

Timeless Benjamin Moore Colors

Benjamin Moore’s Historical Collection (HC) is essentially custom-made for the architecture we see in towns like West Hartford, Simsbury, and Farmington. Here are the most reliable choices:

• Revere Pewter (HC-172): The ultimate “greige.” It bridges the gap between warm and cool perfectly.
• Edgecomb Gray (HC-173): A slightly lighter, softer alternative to Revere Pewter.
• Shaker Beige (HC-45): A fantastic, warm mid-tone. We actually painted a stunning living room in West Hartford with this exact color, and it brought the whole space to life.
• Manchester Tan (HC-81): An elegant, sophisticated neutral that works in almost any lighting.
