Deck Staining, Sealing & Painting in Greater Hartford, CT
A Connecticut deck takes more abuse than most people think. Hot sun all summer. Snow that sits on the boards for months. Pollen in spring, then freezing and thawing all winter long. Leave the wood bare or let an old finish wear out, and it starts to grey and crack. What should have been a simple stain job turns into replacing boards. And that costs you a lot more.
We've been finishing decks around West Hartford, the Farmington Valley, and Glastonbury since 2004. Maybe your deck has never been done. Maybe the old finish is peeling and you're tired of looking at it. Either way, here's how we bring it back.
Our Deck Services
- Deck power washing. Every job starts here. We wash off the dirt, mildew, and old finish so the new stain or paint grabs onto clean wood instead of grime.
- Prep, scraping & sanding. This is the part that decides whether your finish lasts or peels. We scrape off anything loose, sand the rough and weathered boards smooth, and deal with problem spots before anything goes on.
- Deck staining. Transparent, semi-transparent, or solid color. We match it to your deck's age and the look you're after.
- Deck sealing. A clear coat that keeps water out and slows down the greying from the sun. Great for newer decks, or nice wood you want to show off.
- Deck painting. A tough painted finish for decks that suit solid coverage, with the right primer and product for foot traffic and weather.
- Restaining old decks. We bring grey, faded, peeling decks back to life. A lot of homeowners think they're stuck replacing the whole thing. Usually they're not.
Stain, Seal, or Paint? Here's How to Decide
There's no single right answer. It comes down to the wood, how old it is, and the look you want. Here's how we walk you through it at your estimate.
- Transparent and semi-transparent stain lets the wood grain show through while adding some color and sun protection. Best when your deck is in good shape and the wood is worth showing, like cedar or mahogany.
- Solid color stain covers the grain the way paint does, but it wears like a stain. A good pick for older decks with patchy color or small flaws you'd rather not see.
- Sealing keeps the natural wood look and adds clear protection. Perfect for a new deck you want to guard from day one.
- Painting gives you the most even, longest-lasting coverage when a solid finished look is the goal.
We'll look at your boards and tell you straight what they'll take. Then we recommend the finish that'll actually hold up.
How We Do It
- Inspect and advise. We check the wood, the moisture, and the old finish, and point out any boards or fasteners that need attention first.
- Power wash. A real wash to clear off the dirt, mildew, and failing finish.
- Let it dry. The wood has to be dry before we finish it. Stain damp boards and the finish fails fast. So we wait until the deck is ready.
- Prep. We scrape, sand the rough spots smooth, fix the trouble areas, and cover your siding and plants so nothing gets splattered.
- Apply the finish. Stain, seal, or paint, put on with proper coverage and back-brushed where it matters so it soaks in and bonds.
- Walk it with you. We go over the finished deck together and make sure you're happy before we leave.
Why Prep Matters So Much on a Connecticut Deck
New England weather is rough on flat wood. Your deck gets direct sun and traps moisture in a way your siding never does. Then winter sets in, water works its way into every crack, and it lifts any finish that wasn't bonded right. That's why we never skip the wash and the drying and the prep to save a day. Rush stain onto damp or dirty wood and it can peel in a single season. Then you're paying for the whole thing twice. Do it right and the finish protects the wood all year and still looks good.

Deck Staining FAQs
How often should I stain my deck in Connecticut?
It depends on the finish and how exposed the deck is, but most Connecticut decks do well with a refresh every two to four years. A deck that sits in full sun or under heavy snow usually needs it sooner. We'll tell you what to expect for yours.
Can you restain a deck that's grey, peeling, or weathered?
Yes, and it's one of the jobs we do most. A grey or peeling deck almost never needs replacing. It needs a good wash, real prep, and the right finish. Most folks are surprised how much better a tired deck looks once it's done properly.
Should I stain, seal, or paint my deck?
That comes down to the wood, its age, and the look you want. Transparent and semi-transparent stains show off the grain. Solid stain and paint give you fuller coverage and hide flaws. Sealing keeps a natural look with clear protection. We'll recommend the right fit when we come out for your free estimate.
Do you prep the deck, or just slap on the finish?
We do the whole thing. Power washing, scraping, sanding, all of it, before any finish goes down. Prep is what makes a deck finish last. Putting stain over dirty or damp wood is the main reason a finish fails early.
What towns do you serve for deck staining?
We stain, seal, and paint decks across West Hartford, the Farmington Valley, Glastonbury, and the Hartford County towns nearby.
