Sherwin Williams vs Benjamin Moore vs Pittsburgh Paints

Great Paint Jobs Start with Great Suppliers

For a painting contractor, having the right supplier is just as important as having the right crew. A beautiful, long-lasting finish requires high-quality chemistry and reliable local support. Over our 22 years of painting homes and businesses across Connecticut, we have worked with every major brand on the market.

Homeowners often ask us which paint is the “best.” The truth is, the right brand depends on the specific needs of your project. Here is an insider’s look at the three major paint suppliers we trust to protect and beautify your property.

1. Sherwin-Williams: The Contractor’s Best Friend

Sherwin-Williams operates corporate-owned stores, which makes them incredibly reliable for large-scale residential and commercial projects.

  • The Products: They offer an outstanding, wide variety of paints, stains, and heavy-duty primers. Their exterior lines (like Emerald and Duration) are engineered to withstand harsh New England winters and humid summers.
  • The Service: Unmatched. Because they are corporate-owned, we get the exact same pricing, product availability, and color matching at every single store in the state. They are open early, stay late, and even open on weekends.
  • The Bottom Line: When we need massive quantities of highly durable, consistent paint to keep a large exterior project on schedule, Sherwin-Williams is our go-to partner.

2. Benjamin Moore: The Designer’s Choice

Unlike Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore is sold through independent, locally-owned retailers (like your neighborhood hardware store).

  • The Products: They are famous for their rich, complex interior colors and premium finishes. Products like Benjamin Moore Aura and Regal Select are favorites among interior designers and homeowners who want a flawless, washable finish.
  • The Service: Because the stores are independently owned, hours and pricing can vary from town to town. It requires a bit more logistical planning on our end, but the trade-off is supporting local Connecticut hardware stores.
  • The Bottom Line: For high-end interior painting projects where exact color depth and a luxurious finish are the top priorities, Benjamin Moore is a spectacular choice.

3. PPG (Pittsburgh Paints): The Commercial Workhorse

While maybe not as much of a household name for residential interiors as the other two, PPG is a massive player in the professional coatings industry.

  • The Products: They specialize heavily in industrial and commercial coatings. While their residential interior lines are smaller, the products they do offer are highly durable and competitive.
  • The Service & Price: We find their quality-to-price ratio to be excellent, especially for high-traffic commercial spaces that need tough, scuff-resistant finishes.
  • The Bottom Line: When we are tackling a commercial building or an industrial space that requires specialized protective coatings, PPG is a trusted resource.

  • I’ve used Sherwin Williams and Pittsburgh recently on our front porch. I primed with a Pittsburgh primer / finish product and painted with Sherwin Williams Duration. I finished the floor, half walls and front door in Sherwin Williams and the trim in Pittsburgh. Both products applied smoothly and evenly and look fantastic a couple weeks in. I found both our local Pittsburgh dealer and the (even closer) Sherwin William shop helpful with tinting, retinting and helpful recommendations. I’ve used Behr and Glidden on interiors in the past, and while the Behr was OK, after talking to a contractor about it I’ve been looking for sales and coupons at Sherwin Williams prior to further projects. I used the Pittsburgh because I got a deal for half the price of the on sale Sherwin Williams and I’d heard it was excellent. I’m quite pleased with the results.
